Playstation VR 2 players may have to pay more for new games
The Playstation VR 2 will be an expensive piece of technology. But the software could also be more expensive than the competition's offerings in some cases.
At the beginning of November, Sony dropped the bombshell: Playstation VR 2 will cost 600 euros / $550. Those who want to buy the device in a bundle with the flagship game Horizon Call of the Mountain will have to pay 650 euros / $600.
The Playstation 5, which powers the high-end headset, will cost another 450 Euros / $400 - if you can even get the device at that price given the ongoing supply shortages.
At about $1,000, the costs for the console and headset are relatively high when compared to cheaper alternatives like Meta Quest 2 and Pico 4. In return, Playstation VR 2 offers more modern technology and VR games that could make the standalone headsets look old in terms of graphics and scope.
Some VR games are already pricier in the Playstation Store
You will probably have to pay more for VR games in Sony's store than on other VR platforms like the Meta Quest Store and Steam. Even though it is too early to make a final judgment, a look at the EU Playstation Store shows that Sony's VR platform could become the most expensive - at least on average.
So far, 14 titles are listed on the Playstation Store and 11 of them have received a price tag. Eight of the 14 VR games are already available for Meta Quest and Steam.
VR Game | Playstation Store | Meta Quest Store | Steam |
Cities: VR Enhanced Edition | 29,99 Euro | 29,99 Euro | - |
Cosmonious High | 35,99 Euro | 29,99 Euro | 24,99 Euro |
Demeo | 39,99 Euro | 29,99 Euro | 24,99 Euro |
Jurassic World Aftermath Collection | Price unknown | 36,98 Euro (incl. Part 2) | - |
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge | 49,99 Euro | 34,99 Euro (incl. Last Call) | - |
Tentacular | 24,99 Euro | 24,99 Euro | 24,50 Euro |
TWS: S&S - Chapter 2: Retribution | 39,99 Euro | 39,99 Euro | Price unknown |
Zenith: The Last City | 26,99 Euro | 29,99 Euro | 24,99 Euro |
Cosmonious High, Demeo and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge cost 5 to 15 Euros more in the Playstation Store than in the Meta Quest Store. The first two are also available on Steam, where they are even cheaper than in the Meta Quest Store.
Cities: VR, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners 2 and Tentacular cost the same as in the Quest Store. Only the VR MMORPG Zenith: The Last City is cheaper. That could be a mistake: The VR game is pricier in the US Playstation Store than in the EU Playstation Store. Normally, the opposite is more likely to be the case.
PSVR 2 buyers will have to dig deep into their pockets
The following six PSVR 2 games have not (yet) been released on other VR platforms:
- Horizon Call of the Mountain - 69,99 Euro
- The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR - 39,99 Euro
- Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue - 29.99 Euro
- The Light Brigade - 24,99 Euro
- Firewall Ultra - Price unknown
- CROSSFIRE: Sierra Squad - price unknown
Note that exclusive titles like the roller coaster shooter Switchback VR and Horizon Call of the Mountain cost between 40 and 70 (!) Euros. There are only a handful of VR games in the Meta Quest Store that reach the 40 euro mark.
Those entering the PSVR2 hardware ecosystem may have to dig deeper into their pockets for the software as well. That would not be a big surprise, because VR games for the first Playstation VR 2 were also pricier on average than on other VR platforms. Normal games have also been more expensive for Playstation gamers for some time.
