Walkabout Mini Golf VR is coming to the iPhone
The VR game Walkabout Mini Golf is getting a new DLC, designed by a well-known artist collective, and will soon be playable on the iPhone.
Mighty Coconut's Walkabout Mini Golf is one of the most popular VR games. The studio continues to demonstrate how creative level design can overcome the technical limitations of mobile virtual reality headsets.
Most recently, they released the Upside Town DLC, a course inspired by the work of Dutch illustrator M.C. Escher. Just a few days later, the studio announced its next DLC, which will be created in collaboration with the American artist collective Meow Wolf.
Meow Wolf brings punk to the Santa Fe art scene
Meow Wolf began in Santa Fe in 2008 as a space for artists outside the commercial and structured art market of the time. Members of the DIY collective defied all rules and conventions to create immersive, no-budget works that made art tangible.
Meow Wolf eventually found an investor in Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. Martin helped fund Meow Wolf's own showroom, which allowed the company to stay afloat financially and eventually expand.
VR Mini Golf course inspired by real exhibits
Today, the public-benefit corporation has three locations in the US and supports innovative, community-oriented arts and social projects. Meow Wolf is now collaborating with developer studio Mighty Coconut to create its own course for the popular VR game Walkabout Mini Golf.
The real-life Meow Wolf exhibition Numina, which takes visitors through a three-story mystical forest, will be used as a model for the VR course.
In the Walkabout version of Numina, familiar elements of the exhibition will be expanded to include new, exclusive VR areas. Exactly what these will look like can only be guessed at the moment.
No official gameplay footage has been released yet. There is also no word on whether any new gameplay features will be added. The Meow Wolf DLC for Walkabout Mini Golf is scheduled for release later this year.
Walkabout Mini Golf VR is currently available for the Pico 4 and Quest 2, as well as via SteamVR and HTC Viveport. A version for PSVR 2 has already been announced. Now, a mobile version for Apple's iPhone is to follow.
Walkabout Mini Golf: Pocket Edition is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2023 for iOS devices and will offer an augmented reality mini-golf experience. This new approach uses the phone itself to putt and offers cross-play with people playing Walkabout Mini Golf on other devices. Mighty Coconut also announced further partnerships with arcade chains Synthesis VR, CTRL-V and The Cave NZ. More VR arcades will feature Walkabout Mini Golf VR in the future.
"Our goal is to be the first experience for VR/AR everywhere—and the default place to return. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to try out Walkabout Mini Golf, show their friends and spend time hanging out virtually with loved ones." said Mighty Coconut CEO Lucas Martell.
