Steam's overlay freezes Linux games on alt-tab, and Valve has merged four reports
Linux owners are reporting that games freeze for good within seconds of an alt-tab, and that switching Steam’s in-game overlay off is what stops it. Valve has merged four reports into two issues on its own trackers, issue 13709 and issue 13682, and has posted triage but no diagnosis in either.

The older of the two went up on October 3 from a Kubuntu owner on a Wayland session with a Radeon RX 7600 XT, who traced the freeze to a game thread stuck opening the overlay helper’s socket. Valve added its overlay, Web Component and Proton labels to it about 75 minutes later.
Issue 13709 followed five days after that, from a Kubuntu owner running the client beta on a Radeon RX 6750 XT: "Games hang after playing for varying periods of time, especially after tabbing out", with Overwatch as the game and a line stating that it "does not occur on the Stable branch". Valve put its overlay label on that one about 55 minutes later.
Reporters put the spread on the October 13 client
At 01:45 UTC on October 14 the same owner wrote "Looks like this now happens on the stable branch after today’s update", then renamed the report nine seconds later, dropping "on Steam Beta" from its title. Valve’s October 13 stable client update had gone out at 23:38 UTC the evening before, and its note says that it "will be automatically downloaded".
Four more owners followed within a day and a half, and the timing is theirs rather than Valve’s. One on Fedora 43 with Nvidia’s 580 driver and Sway dates it to October 13 in Borderlands 2, and one on Arch with Hyprland and a GTX 1070 says Warframe froze about 35 seconds after launch under both Proton Experimental and Proton 11.0-2e.
It is not one vendor or one desktop. The same thread carries an RX 6950 XT on Kubuntu, where the owner says it happens "regardless of the game and whether it’s a native title or running under Proton", and an RX 9070 XT on GNOME 51 reproducing it in Arc Raiders by alt-tabbing two or three times in a row. A Steam Deck owner reports the same freeze in Desktop mode after switching windows a few times.
Valve has merged four reports and named no cause
The oldest merge is issue 13714, "Steam Overlay Causes Wuthering Waves Freeze/Hang", which Valve folded into 13709 on October 10 with "I expect this is the same issue as #13709". Three more went the same way on October 15 inside eight hours: a Team Fortress 2 report where the overlay asserts in SerializedSurface.cpp, closed into 13682 at 14:17 UTC, a Proton report titled "Alt tabing causing freezing after recent client update on multiple games", closed into 13709 three minutes after it was filed, and a Debian 13 report about Proton games freezing on alt-tab, closed into 13682 at 22:35 UTC.
Two of the four point at 13682 and two at 13709, and both of those are still open. On the pair it sent to 13682 Valve wrote "this issue is already being tracked at #13682. Closing as a duplicate."
The two filed on the Linux client tracker on October 15 both state that their owners did not opt into the client beta, and both name the same client build, 1791918634. One of them is on KDE Plasma 6.6.6 with an Intel Arc card and a native Linux Team Fortress 2, which puts the freeze outside Proton as well as inside it.
What Valve has published is the triage: labels on both open reports, four duplicate closures and a pair of issue numbers. It has named no build, offered no cause and put out no known-issues note, and the socket and queue detail in the reports is owners’ own work, one of them openly written with the help of a language model.
The workaround is a checkbox, and it costs you the overlay
Owners report the same fix, per game or globally: turn the Steam overlay off, which also takes away the screenshots and game recording that run through it. One report describes killing only the gameoverlayui helper process and getting a live Dota 2 session back without restarting the game or Steam.
Valve fixed a different overlay fault in Vulkan games in its October 1 client beta, a crash when a game recreated its swapchain, and that one had a different symptom. On the alt-tab freeze, the only thing on the record from Valve is which two reports it is reading.
