FACTS

Meta is set to debut the “Blumhouse Horrorverse” inside Meta Horizon Worlds on May 22. The new immersive experience drops users into a world inspired by some of Blumhouse’s most recognizable horror movies and franchises. Access will be available through the Meta Horizon app using Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest 2 VR headsets, as well as directly in a web browser.

Blumhouse Horrorverse takes the shape of a theme park, set in a shadowy, fog-filled forest anchored by a towering, ominous Blumhouse mansion at its heart. Users can wander the woods with friends, tackling interactive challenges and minigames themed after Blumhouse hits. These include target practice zones inspired by “The Purge,” a “Wolf Man” mini-game, and a dedicated theater space for watching exclusive Blumhouse clips.

As you move through the area, you’ll find even more chilling spots referencing Blumhouse and Universal movies like “M3GAN,” “Wolf Man,” “The Black Phone,” and “Happy Death Day.” The centerpiece, the Blumhouse mansion, houses “Survival Lockdown” — a cooperative game that starts when someone pulls a lever.

Once inside, players are randomly assigned to play as either a survivor or a villain. If you’re a survivor, your team has to hunt down missing key cards and break the lockdown. If you’re the villain — possibly taking on the persona of iconic characters like M3GAN or Babyface — your goal is to hunt down the survivors before they escape.

CONTEXT

Meta’s Ongoing Bet on VR Horror

The Blumhouse Horrorverse isn’t Meta’s first experiment with virtual reality horror. The company has previously teamed up with genre legend Eli Roth on a string of projects. Roth has produced three VR horror experiences for Meta so far: “Haunted House: Trick-VR-Treat,” a 180-degree film featuring Vanessa Hudgens, and “Be Mine: A VR Valentine’s Slasher,” a 30-minute VR short about a young woman being stalked by a masked killer.

Roth’s latest effort is his biggest yet — “The Faceless Lady,” a six-episode VR horror series set in Meta Horizon Worlds. Drawing on Irish ghost stories, the series is set in a centuries-old castle where three couples battle over an inheritance, unaware that a vengeful spirit still haunts the grounds. The series is shot in stereoscopic 3D and, according to reports, is six times longer than Roth’s earlier VR projects.
