"Iron Man VR" studio teases PSVR 2 project, gives away VR game

Iron Man VR was a good game that suffered from Sony's outdated VR technology. That won't be the case with the next project.

The superhero game was a commissioned work by Sony and the last big exclusive title for Playstation VR. It was released for Playstation VR in 2020 and received a lot of attention from the press because Iron Man is a big name.

However, reviewers weren't at all thrilled with Iron Man VR. The responsible studio Camouflaj got a lot out of Playstation VR, but ultimately lost the battle against the dated technology

The aged PS4, ancient motion controllers and a tracking system that wasn't designed for free-roaming in space showed the studio limitations. Limitations that would not have applied in the case of Playstation VR 2.

Studio founder teases PSVR2 game

Camouflaj might get a well-deserved second chance from Sony. Job postings from the studio and the latest message from studio head Ryan Payton point to this.

On the game company's official website, Payton writes that his studio is in the process of strengthening partnerships with "long-time collaborators" and is "going all-in on VR" after six years. "There are exciting things on the horizon, and we can’t wait to tell you more," the studio founder writes.

There hasn't been any news from Camouflaj since 2020, but so far everything indicates that the studio is working on a VR game for Playstation VR 2, which could be released at the launch of the next-gen headset.

Camouflaj's first VR game is now free for Quest & PC VR

Camouflaj started as a smartphone developer and later ported its first major game, the dystopian stealth title République, to other systems, including virtual reality. In 2019, République VR was released for Meta Quest.

To celebrate the title's tenth anniversary, the studio is giving the game away. You can get it via the Oculus Store and Steam. For Playstation VR, République was released in March in a paid anniversary edition.

When the Playstation VR 2 will hit the market is still a mystery. According to the latest blog post, Sony is in the middle of preparations for the launch. That sounds more like 2022 than 2023, but that is not confirmed.
