How Japan and South Korea rely on the Metaverse for education
Schools and organizations in South Korea and Japan already use the Metaverse as a teaching and training tool.
Educational institutions in South Korea and Japan are experimenting with VR applications and incorporating the metaverse into lessons. They are creating an immersive environment for personalized learning.
How the metaverse is changing the classroom
In South Korea, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is being transformed into a “metaversity”. The university plans to digitize its classrooms in the metaverse and offer courses in cyberspace. To this end, it is investing $300,000 annually in equipment and program development for students and has allocated $500,000 to create metaverse classrooms.
N and S High Schools are Japan’s largest online high schools. More than 7,000 students learn using VR. The schools are moving classes to the metaverse to enable learning without physical constraints in an immersive environment. A survey of VR participants in the past year showed a satisfaction rate of more than 98 percent.
Heavy investment planned in Metaverse and VR
South Korea and Japan are working to promote digital literacy. In 2022, South Korea’s Ministry of Science announced an investment of 223.7 billion won ($166 million) to promote a Metaverse ecosystem. Plans also include a “Metaverse Academy” to train experts.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made a similar statement last year. He said his country wants to expand the use of various technologies, including the Metaverse, and plans to provide corresponding support. This is intended to accelerate the digital transformation in the public and private sectors.
Other countries also using VR in education
Globally, the use of VR as a teaching tool is on the rise. In Poland, Meta, VR Heroes, and the National Research Institute are working together to teach teachers how to use immersive technologies, and in California, a school set up an ambitious VR lab.
Germany is also working to integrate VR as a teaching tool in educational institutions. For example, an education center opened in Hanover to train teachers to teach VR. A new job training course, designer for immersive media, will start in 2023.
