ESPN brings 8K, 180-degree sport to Meta Quest this year, but only college football

ESPN is bringing live sport to Meta Quest in a format Meta calls Immersive Sports, with a front-row camera position, 8K streaming and 180-degree views, and the only sport named for this year is college football. Meta says more sports follow in 2027.

Meta announced it at Connect 2026 on September 23, alongside Meta VR Glasses, a 100-gram device that does not go on sale until spring 2027. Immersive Sports is one of the few Connect items aimed at hardware Quest owners already have.

The 100-event figure belongs to hardware that ships in 2027

Meta also put a number on live immersive sport: over 100 events each year, with MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC named as partners. That schedule is tied to Meta VR Glasses, which go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 in the US.

Meta attaches a condition to the count, "Once Meta VR Glasses launch". Quest owners are being offered one sport this year and more sports in 2027, not a hundred events.

Meta has named ESPN and almost nothing else

There is no start date beyond "this year", no price, no subscription terms and no list of fixtures. Meta has not said which app on Quest carries the streams, or which countries can watch them.

The announcement is also Meta’s alone. ESPN has published no statement of its own about Immersive Sports, so the specification, the timing and the shape of the partnership are all Meta’s account of them.

The 8K figure describes the stream rather than the headset. Spread across 180 degrees, an 8K frame covers twice the arc that the same frame would cover across 90 degrees, and on Meta Quest 3 it arrives at panels of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye.

Meta names only Meta Quest for 2026, and describes the 2027 expansion as more sports rather than more hardware. It has not said whether a particular Quest model is needed.

Live sport on Quest is not new, the specification is

Meta has been putting live sport into Quest for years. It has carried 52 live NBA games in VR for Quest users, brought the WNBA back for the 2025 season, and streamed UFC events through Xtadium and Horizon Worlds in 2023.

What changes here is the specification and the name attached to it. None of those earlier streams came with an 8K figure, and none of them carried ESPN’s branding.

What Quest owners should expect before January

College football is the opener, and Meta has committed to it arriving in 2026, which leaves a little over three months. It has not said which game, which weekend, or what watching one costs.

For a Connect built around a device that does not arrive until spring 2027, a single 8K broadcast on the headset people own is the part that can be checked this year.
