Apple Reality Pro: "Final sprint" to mass production underway – Report

Apple Reality Pro:

Signs are mounting that Apple's Mixed Reality headset will be announced soon.

According to a report in Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Apple's supply chain is in the final stages of preparing for mass production. The report refers to a "final sprint" to finalize techniques and assembly procedures.

GIS, a subsidiary of Foxconn, is reportedly part of the supply chain and operates a factory in China just for laminating the headset's lenses. The same company also laminates iPad displays for Apple. After lamination, the lenses are said to be sent to another company that assembles the headset.

The report also claims that mass production will begin later in the second quarter, which began April 1, and continue into the third quarter.

WWDC unveiling looks increasingly likely

The rumors coincide with other reports that suggest an unveiling at WWDC 2023 and a launch at a later date. It is also possible that the first units will only go to developers. GIS previously announced that it would begin shipping Metaverse products in the second quarter of 2023.

According to recent reports, the mixed reality headset is expected to launch with a wide variety of apps and will feature an external battery pack to improve comfort, a controversial design decision. One tester reportedly tried the product and was "blown away" by it.

Indeed, the mixed reality headset will have to be more than just compelling, as the price is rumored to be around $3,000. Meta released a similar product, the Meta Quest Pro, in October 2022 for $1,500. It flopped, and its price was slashed by a third a few months later.
