Playstation VR 2: Thousands of devkits in circulation

US import logs suggest Sony has shipped a large number of PSVR 2 development kits.

In February, Sony revealed the design of the Playstation VR 2, and the corresponding blog post said that devkits of the new VR headset were already in the hands of game developers. Thanks to a US import log, we know how many devices we could be talking about.

The discovery was made by the website Tweaktown. According to the log, Sony shipped 2,374 packages from Japan and South Korea to Sony's California branch in Oakland between October 2021 and January 2022.

The breakdown is as follows:

  • October 14, 2021: 240 boxes from Japan
  • October 24, 2021: 240 boxes from South Korea
  • November 3, 2021: 480 boxes from Japan
  • December 8, 2021: 980 boxes from Japan
  • January 30, 2022: 434 boxes from Japan

The individual shipments weigh between 2.6 and 8.7 tons.

Many devkits, many games?

The content of the imports is listed as "development kit for interactive entertainment software".

It is not specified that there are PSVR 2 devkits in those boxes. However, that is the most likely option. PS5 devkits would be a bit late, and it's too early for PS5 Pro devkits. Also, just three weeks after the last big shipment, Sony wrote that developers are equipped with devkits.

We don't know how many studios received how many units. However, the number seems substantial and indicates that there are a decent number of VR games in development.

Playstation VR 2 Market launch: 2022 or 2023?

The fact that the devkits were only recently sent out in larger quantities rather suggests that the VR headset will not be released this year. In the months that remain, studios could port their older PSVR games for the new hardware, but are unlikely to get new VR games ready. Unless they develop without devkits and optimize in the remaining time.

Sony has not yet commented on the market launch and according to recent rumors, the company is now targeting 2023. Sony wants to satisfy the PS5 demand first and make sure that a sufficiently large installation base exists so that there are enough people interested in the VR headset.
