Since his quite successful comic book adaptations Watchmen and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder has arrived in the upper league of Hollywood directors.

Buoyed by his successes and deep affection for George Lucas' epic Star Wars franchise, Snyder wanted to tackle his own science fiction epic years ago. He sketched out a new Star Wars vision. Now "Rebel Moon" is to be realized - but without a Star Wars license.

Rebel Moon was originally supposed to be a Star Wars movie

According to rumors, there were serious talks between Snyder and Lucasfilm, the rights holder at the time, about a new Star Wars movie. The director is said to have worked out a concept called "Rebel Moon" long before Disney took over, but it was never realized.

Even after Disney bought the Star Wars rights, the project was never realized - and that's probably where it will stay. Snyder announced to the Times last year that he no longer wanted to make a Star Wars film. It's hard for him as a director to realize projects where his personal view of things is not in demand, he said.

Snyder confirmed the rumors about the talks with Lucas in a podcast. In the meantime, however, he had decided that he wanted to realize his science fiction project outside the Star Wars universe - together with the streaming service Netflix.

Netflix lets Zack Snyder realize his own sci-fi vision

With the streaming giant Netflix, the director now has a potent financier at his side who will let him realize his vision. "Rebel Moon" is still supposed to tell the same story as in the original Star Wars pitch. Only the universe has changed, according to Snyder.

Look-and-feel of the film should be reminiscent of the Krypton scenes from Man of Steel, "but with the biggest steroids I can give it," Snyder promises. The sci-fi project is intended to lay the groundwork for a brand-new franchise and create a universe that can be expanded much like Star Wars or Dune, he says.

Rebel Moon tells the story of a young woman whose home planet is under attack by a terrible force. To save her world, she embarks on a journey across the universe to find allies in the fight against evil.

He is joined by Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel), South Korean actress Bae Doona (The Silent Sea) and Ray Fisher, who already worked with the director in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

There is no start date for Rebel Moon yet. Judging by the sheer scope of the project, it will probably take until 2023 or longer.
