Eye tracking: New semi-transparent camera promises better VR experience
Researchers at the ICFO Institute de Ciències Fotòniques at the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology have developed a semi-transparent camera that enhances AR/VR experiences by providing an unobstructed view. The sensor consists of an 8×8 array of semitransparent photodetectors and electrodes on a fully transparent substrate. Its optical transparency ranges from 85 to 95 percent. This design allows the sensor to capture light while transmitting a significant amount, making it suitable for applications that require both sensing capability and transparency. The technology could be used for eye tracking in VR and AR headsets and, after further improvements, in smart contact lenses.
HTC Vive enables DIY repairs of VR headsets through cooperation with iFixit
HTC Vive and iFixit have announced a new partnership that allows owners of HTC Vive headsets in North America to obtain official replacement parts and repair guides for their devices. The step-by-step instructions provided by iFixit are designed to allow users without special technical knowledge to perform repairs on their own. Parts offered include specific components for Vive CE and Vive Pro headsets, Vive wireless adapters, Vive trackers, wall mounts, cables, and Vive VR controllers.
Apple Vision Pro: Spatial Personas launch into public beta
Apple launches the public beta for Spatial Personas, a spatial version of its avatar system. Unlike normal Personas, the frame is removed, and the other person can move around the room. Spatial Personas can be used in FaceTime calls with up to five people, and the digital alter egos can interact with the same content (movies, whiteboards, games) via Shareplay. Vision OS 1.1 is required for Spatial Personas. RoadtoVR and Inverse have already tested the new avatars.
