The Valve Index is out of production, and Valve says nothing changes if you own one

Valve has stopped making the Valve Index, and its notice tells existing owners that "nothing changes". The page Valve titles "Valve Index Sunset" says the headset "is no longer being produced", that remaining headsets, controllers and accessories are "still available at the new prices below while supplies last", and that an Index "is still supported on Steam and SteamVR".

Valve published the page on October 13 at 22:34 UTC. It carries no closing date for the price change and no figure for how much stock is left.

Every remaining Index item carries the same 20% cut. The headset is $399.20 in the US, down from $499, with €431.20 in Germany and £367.20 in the UK, while the controllers fall from $279 to $223.20 and a single base station from $149 to $119.20.

The full Valve Index VR Kit is $799.20 in the US, €863.20 in Germany and £735.20 in the UK, down from $999, the price the kit launched at in 2019. The cut reaches the spares as well, with the Index Replacement Tether at $103.20 from $129.

Steam’s own storefront records all of that as a 20% discount on each item, the same machinery Valve uses for a seasonal sale, while the page itself calls them "the new prices". Valve attaches no end date to either description.

Valve says Index support is unchanged

The promise to owners is one sentence long: an Index "is still supported on Steam and SteamVR", and anyone with a hardware fault is pointed at Steam Support through Valve’s own Index help wizard. The only thing Valve puts a limit on is the stock.

This is a global wind-down rather than a regional price move. Valve carries the same wording in every language on the page, with the German text saying production of the Index "wird eingestellt" and the French opening "Nous avons cessé la production du casque Valve Index".

Valve listed Steam Frame 29 days earlier

Valve’s store listing dates the Index headset to June 28, 2019, when the full kit cost $999. Valve’s Steam Frame listing is dated September 14, 2026 at $1,059 in the US, so the Index ran for seven years and two months before another Valve headset followed it.

Seven years is a long run for one headset. The Index was still ahead of the Quest 3 in Valve’s SteamVR hardware survey in mid-2024, five years after it shipped, and $499 was still its list price when the notice went up.

The notice also lands while the Frame is still working through its queue. Valve has been telling Frame reservation holders whether their purchase email arrives by December or in 2027, which puts some of them more than a year away from the headset that follows the one Valve has just stopped building.

The full kit launched at $999 in 2019 and leaves with a 20% cut, no cut-off date, and a one-line promise that nothing changes for the people who already bought one.
