The Tribeca Film Festival is one of the most important film festivals in the world. Every year, it offers a platform for independent filmmakers. In addition to the traditional film program, a separate section called Tribeca Immersive focuses on XR storytelling. These groundbreaking VR and AR projects transport audiences into fascinating worlds that blur the lines between technology and storytelling.

13 XR projects from multiple countries and genres

Tribeca Immersive 2023 includes 13 XR projects from a variety of countries and genres. These works are divided into two categories: Main Competition and New Voices Competition.

The Main Competition includes XR projects nominated for the Storyscapes Award, which honors artists who combine technology and storytelling. The XR projects in the New Voices Competition are first- or second-time creations by artists who bring new perspectives and artistic language to immersive storytelling.

From emojis to pirates

The projects could hardly be more diverse. Topics range from VR films to interactive experiences, from emojis to pirates.

"In Search of Time" sends participants on a poetic journey through time. "Emoji" is an interactive group experience exploring communication. Viewers help Cheng Shih become a pirate queen in "The Pirate Queen: A Forgotten Legend". In other projects, participants visit a monster factory, learn about the beginnings of video games, and learn about the history and culture of the African American community.

Tribeca Immersive is not only a showcase for creative XR projects. It's also an important driver for the VR industry. The festival is a networking opportunity for XR creatives, festival attendees, and industry representatives. It also showcases the potential and breadth of VR as an art form, promoting visibility and recognition of VR projects that are often on the fringes of the film industry.

How to experience Tribeca Immersive
