Roblox: Oculus Quest version in the works?
Game builder Roblox experienced a phenomenal rise during Pandemic. Now its CEO hints that the metaverse could expand to other platforms, including Oculus Quest.
In June 2020, a few months after the pandemic began, Roblox reached a new milestone: the game recorded 150 million concurrent monthly active users for the first time. By year's end, the title had generated $2.29 billion in revenue, ahead of titles like Pokémon Go, Call of Duty, and League of Legends. Roblox's developers alone earned $250 million from their content that year.
Driven by this success, the company was able to secure a mega-investment of 520 million US dollars in early 2021, with its value newly estimated at just under 30 billion US dollars.
Switch, Playstation… and Quest.
Roblox is available for PC, Xbox One, iOS and Android. In an investor conference held to coincide with its recent quarterly results, Roblox CEO David Baszucki hinted at expansion plans. The vision, he said, is for the game kit to become available on all devices.
What's notable about the statement is that the Roblox founder mentions Oculus Quest in the same breath as Nintendo's and Sony's mainstream game consoles. Former Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack recently said that Meta Quest 2 was doing very well in the market, but not yet on the scale of a Nintendo Switch.
A VR version of the video game builder has been available for SteamVR since 2016. Accordingly, the studio could draw on this groundwork and optimize the VR version for Quest. However, Baszucki did not want to name a concrete release date, neither for Oculus Quest nor for the other platforms.
