Paranormal Hunter: Occult Ghost Hunting for VR - Free Demo

The co-op game Paranormal Hunter lets especially cold-blooded gamers track down occult horror rituals in VR.

An abandoned haunted house, up to four players and all kinds of occult rituals: In the cooperative Steam title Paranormal Hunter, a lot is reminiscent of the popular horror game Phasmophobia. Paranormal Hunter also lets you choose whether you want to be scared in front of the monitor in the classic way or dare to put on a VR headset. Early Access on Steam is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2022.

You can already take a look at a free demo. However, the demo only works with Oculus Rift and Quest 2 via Meta Link in virtual reality for the time being. The demo is limited to exploring a first cursed building. Cult items are distributed differently on each playthrough to add a bit more variety.

Paranormal Hunter: Exorcism as a VR game

So-called "symbols of hate" have to be tracked down in dim hallways and partially locked rooms in order to exorcise ghosts with them. Summoning circles and obstacles like debris are also procedurally generated and can be found at different locations on the map with each playthrough.

Before a trip into the house, you equip yourself in the store with useful equipment, for example to keep away intrusive spooky creatures. These include incense, amulets, a ghost sensor, and a one-time-use crystal for locating the offerings.

According to developer studio Ealogames, the team includes industry veterans who already worked on "Shenmue" and "Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine", respectively. However, a trip to the first house makes it clear that the small studio still has a lot of work to do. The first menus were primarily tailored for monitor use, and the ghosts' stiff animations seem more unintentionally funny than scary.

Some dilapidated rooms already look much more convincing - especially when they are only illuminated by the narrow cone of the flashlight. By the way, the lamp, which is available in two sizes, has a practical UV bulb that can be used to reliably grill an intrusive ghost.

Such a defense, however, provides peace only for a short time. The final expulsion can only be done with the help of the scattered morbid cult objects. If you succeed, you'll get cash for the store; if you fail, you'll lose your current equipment.

The Early Access phase should take about six months. You can already try out the free demo on Steam. Console adaptations for Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5 are also planned, but a version for PSVR or Playstation VR 2 has not yet been confirmed.
