Meta Quest gets a rent-or-buy film store in the US this year, but IMAX needs the 2027 glasses
Meta says you will be able to rent or buy hundreds of 2D and 3D films on Meta Quest in the US later this year. Everything carrying the IMAX name belongs to a different device, Meta VR Glasses, which go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99.

Meta says that "for a greater breadth of 2D and 3D cinema, you'll be able to rent or buy hundreds of movies later this year on Meta Quest in the US". There is no store name, no pricing, no date inside the year and no market outside the US.
The catalogue is meant to grow from there. Meta says thousands of titles will be available internationally by the time Meta VR Glasses launch, including 3D favourites from Lionsgate.
That is the sharper limit for anyone reading this outside the US. The rental and purchase store starts in one country, and the only timing Meta gives for the rest of the world is the spring 2027 hardware launch, more than a year away.
The IMAX certification belongs to the 2027 glasses
Meta calls Meta VR Glasses "the first ever IMAX Enhanced certified VR device" and says they will be one of the only ways to watch select films at home in IMAX's exclusive expanded aspect ratio. The certification is Meta's claim alone. IMAX has announced nothing of its own about Meta or the glasses, and its latest press release is dated September 8.
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sit on the same side of the line: Meta lists both as VR Glasses features, not Quest ones. A Quest owner who buys a film from the new store this year gets the film, not the certification.
Cameron's 3D blockbusters carry a 2027 date
Meta says it is partnering with director James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision to debut "first time in 3D" blockbusters in 2027. Meta and Lightstorm Vision announced their 3D partnership in December 2024, and Cameron praised Quest 3's 3D playback in April 2025. The year attached to the films is the new part, and Meta names none of them.
One film has a Quest date before then
Meta says Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, the concert film co-directed by Billie Eilish and James Cameron, will be exclusively available to buy and rent in 3D on Quest in November. It is the only title in the whole film announcement with both a platform and a month.
Two others have dates but no named device. Open Season, which puts the viewer in the room with four-time NBA champion Draymond Green as he goes to therapy during his 2025-2026 season, launches on September 29, and a 3D version of Matthew Vaughn's action film Stuntnuts follows in 2027.
Meta's framing is that new 3D films will land every month. Until the glasses arrive in spring 2027, the version of that a Quest owner can act on is a store with no date beyond "later this year" and a Billie Eilish concert film in November.
