Red Matter set the standard for virtual reality graphics in 2018. On the mobile VR headset Quest 2, the VR adventure is still considered one of the most beautiful VR games ever. With Part 2, developer studio Vertical Robot 2022 went one better and pushed Quest 2 to its graphical limits.

Skydance's The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, released two years later, was also graphically convincing – at least on PC VR. The Quest version was clearly less impressive. As announced at Meta Connect 2023, both VR games will get an improved version for the upcoming Meta Quest 3. The graphical comparison with the Quest 2 versions is impressive.

In a direct graphical comparison between Quest 2 and Quest 3, the significantly higher resolution and overall more vivid game environment are immediately noticeable in both VR games.

The Quest 3 update brings the mobile version of Red Matter 2 very close to the graphics of the PSVR 2 version. Announced improvements include 4K textures, dynamic shadows, and high-quality shadow filtering.

According to Vertical Robot, Red Matter 2 on the Quest 3 achieves up to a 16x increase in pixel count. As a result, surfaces are more detailed and more reflections and lighting effects are possible due to the Quest 3's higher performance.

What about Red Matter and TWD: Saints & Sinners 2?

It is not yet known if Vertical Robot and Skydance will also optimize the other two parts of their game series for Meta Quest 3. Just a few days ago, Vertical Robot announced extensive improvements for the first Red Matter game, but for now only for PSVR 2 and PC VR via SteamVR.
