Meta will stop adding features to Quest 2 and Quest Pro in 2027, but your games can keep working

Meta is preparing to end new feature updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, with the headsets’ final operating system release due to reach all devices by March 2027. Their games, purchases and multiplayer support are set to remain available after that transition.

The company says Horizon OS 2.13 will be the last feature release for both headsets. Security patches and critical bug fixes will continue on a quarterly basis through the end of 2027, giving owners a longer window of maintenance after feature development stops.

That does not mean the devices switch off in March. The change instead limits which future platform features and developer tools can reach the older headsets, while individual game makers can make their own decisions about ongoing support.

Purchased games and the Quest store will stay available

In its guidance for developers, Meta says players can continue to find, buy, download and play apps on Quest 2 and Quest Pro. It says existing purchases remain accessible and apps will not be removed from the store simply because of this transition.

Meta also says cross-play between the older headsets and Quest 3 or Quest 3S remains supported at the platform level. That is not a guarantee every individual game will keep cross-play indefinitely: developers still need to maintain compatibility between their own builds.

Developers can keep shipping updates to existing Quest 2 and Quest Pro apps. Meta says new apps supporting either device can be submitted through December 2027. After that, new titles can target Quest 3, Quest 3S and later headsets, but will not be offered for the two older models.

Security fixes continue after the last new features arrive

The final operating system update is Horizon OS 2.13, while version 213 is the last supported Meta VR OS software development kit for the two devices. New features, platform capabilities and APIs introduced after that will be available only on Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer hardware, Meta says.

The company will no longer test future OS and SDK releases against Quest 2 and Quest Pro after version 213. Its published timetable puts the final security patch in December 2027; owners should not assume that individual apps or third-party services have identical support schedules.

For developers who stop supporting the older headsets in a way that removes access to content or essential services, Meta’s app policies require at least 180 days’ notice to customers. Developers can also freeze a final build for those devices or stop offering an app for sale on them.

The Quest 2 launched in 2020, followed by Quest Pro in 2022. Owners considering an upgrade have time to check the games and features they actually use: the announcement does not require an immediate move to newer hardware.
