Kayak VR: Stunningly beautiful PC VR game takes you to the Antarctic
The paddle boat simulation Kayak VR: Mirage is a real eye-catcher. Now the team shows a new environment: the Antarctic level.
PC VR has many advantages, the most important one is graphical performance. If you play native quest games most of the time, you quickly forget what virtual reality would be capable of visually. This became clear to me again recently when I fired up Skyrim VR and Half-Life: Alyx after a long PC VR break.
I was flabbergasted.
Kayak VR: Mirage should have the same effect. The studio responsible, Better Than Life, is developing the paddleboarding simulation solely with PC VR in mind. The graphics are correspondingly impressive, as the team demonstrated last summer using a canyon level as an example.
Studio reveals a new level
Now the studio is back with news after a longer break. On Reddit, the team writes that they have been working hard on the game and several new environments. As a small update, the studio shows a new gameplay scene from the Antarctic. Again, the realistic water simulation including transparency and reflections, crisp textures and the light atmosphere are impressive.
Kayak VR: Mirage will offer two modes: Time Race and Free Ride. Those who want to relax and just soak up the surroundings may do so.
The studio has also included a tutorial, programmed new comfort settings to combat motion sickness, improved graphics, sound and effects, and made fine adjustments to the paddleboard physics.
Kayak VR: Launch in a few months
The game will offer four environments when it is released. It is scheduled to launch in Early Access at the beginning of April, first on Steam and later on the Rift Store. However, the launch could still be delayed by a month. The game is expected to cost around $20.
The studio would like to release Kayak VR for the Playstation VR 2, but there are no porting plans for the Quest. However, the quest port may still be an option at a later time.
Those who would like to try out the game before the Early Access release can request access to the beta version on the studio's Discord server in the #beta-test-application channel.
