GTA 6 preload starts November 10, and Rockstar confirms how much space to clear before launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 players can start downloading the game on November 10, and Rockstar says they may need up to 212GB of free storage to do it. The preload begins ahead of the game’s November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The start time depends on the console. PS5 players can begin at midnight local time on November 10, while Xbox Series X|S owners get a single worldwide start time: midnight GMT on November 10.

Rockstar’s preload FAQ says the required available space is up to 212GB depending on the device. That gives players an official figure to prepare for after earlier reports of a roughly 210GB download.

When GTA 6 preloads begin

For digital preorders on PS5, the download opens at the start of November 10 in the player’s local time zone. On Xbox, the 00:00 GMT start means November 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern or 4 p.m. Pacific in the United States.

Rockstar says code-in-box versions for both consoles should become available at retailers beginning November 12. The company has announced the November 19 launch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; the preload announcement does not provide a PC release date.

Sony’s own launch-preparation guide recommends clearing at least 212GB on PS5. Rockstar’s wording is up to 212GB depending on the device, so the number should be treated as a storage requirement to plan around rather than an identical download size for every version.

How to prepare an automatic download

On PS5, Rockstar says automatic downloads must be enabled and the console must be switched on or in Rest Mode. Xbox players need automatic updates enabled and the console switched on or in Sleep mode.

Those settings are useful if the preload opens while you are away from your console. The game will still launch on November 19; downloading the files early does not unlock it ahead of release.

Rockstar has also said it plans to offer a printable cover-art poster and Leonida map as a free digital download on launch day. A physical double-sided version is planned for its store shortly afterward for $0.99, or free with another store purchase.
