FACTS

Combat Waffle Studios, best known for the hit VR shooter Ghosts of Tabor, has rolled out a purpose-built anti-cheat solution called “Tomahawk” for standalone VR platforms. Early results are already showing promise.

Scott Albright, founder and CEO of Combat Waffle, shared on LinkedIn that Tomahawk validated over 10 million game sessions in its first week — without a single outage or glitch. The system has already flagged and banned hundreds of cheaters, including some notorious cheat software developers.

Tomahawk’s main focus is patching up weak spots that conventional anti-cheat tools tend to miss. One highlight: the system is proving especially effective against ByteUs, a major VR cheat community with more than 60,000 members. Cheat tools that previously worked for ByteUs are now getting caught and blocked automatically.

Built in-house by white-hat hackers

“With Tomahawk's deployment, firmware bypasses and APK/OBB modifications are now instantly flagged and prevented,” says Albright. The tech was developed internally by a white-hat hacker at Combat Waffle Studios, which, according to Albright, means the system can keep pace with the latest threats.

The numbers are striking: Tomahawk’s real-time backend has logged over 10 million validated sessions and more than 81,000 unique clients, but only 162 cheaters have been flagged — all of whom were personally verified. Forensic data on suspicious users includes app integrity issues, invalid nonce detection, and tampering with the file system.

CONTEXT

Combat Waffle Studios on the rise

Combat Waffle Studios has carved out a strong position in the VR space with Ghosts of Tabor. Since launching in Early Access for Steam and Meta Quest in March 2023, the game has surpassed $20 million in total sales in 2024.

The studio isn’t standing still. Alongside ongoing development of Ghosts of Tabor — which is set to launch for PlayStation VR 2 on May 7 — Combat Waffle has also released two more VR survival titles: Silent North and Grim. With Tomahawk now in the mix, the studio is clearly aiming to raise the bar for game security in VR.

For Albright, Tomahawk’s mission goes beyond just catching cheaters. The goal is to build a safer, fairer VR gaming ecosystem. “We’re not just catching cheaters — we’re driving them out,” Albright says.
