Helldivers 2 gets a memory leak fix in GE-Proton’s latest Linux gaming update
A new GE-Proton release targets a memory leak that could build up while playing Helldivers 2 on Linux. The community-made compatibility tool also includes fixes for games including RuneScape, Space Marine 2 and Star Citizen.
GE-Proton 11-12 was released on November 3. It is an independently maintained variant of Proton, the compatibility technology used to run many Windows games on Linux. It is separate from Valve’s own stable and Experimental Proton releases and does not replace them automatically.
The release notes from maintainer GloriousEggroll say the Helldivers 2 fix addresses a leak involving roughly 360 MiB of RAM per hour, alongside 34 GiB of virtual address space. Those are different measurements: reserved address space should not be read as 34 GiB of physical memory consumed each hour.
Long Helldivers 2 sessions get two cleanup fixes
The release also fixes threads and file descriptors accumulating during a Helldivers 2 session. Both leaks stemmed from terminated threads not being cleaned up, according to the notes.
A separate fix targets Space Marine 2 crashes after long play sessions. The update also changes memory handling for EVE Online: the maintainer reports that, in a test running five clients, memory growth fell from 292 MiB per hour to 28.5 MiB per hour. That is a specific test result, not a promise of the same change on every system.
These are changes to the compatibility layer, not patches published by the studios behind those games. Results can depend on the game build, Linux setup and graphics driver.
Controller and graphics changes reach other games
For RuneScape, the maintainer says colours should no longer appear washed out. Another change addresses a missing game window in its Vulkan beta under Wine-Wayland when an Nvidia graphics card and anti-aliasing are used.
The update says DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers can now work together over USB in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Horizon Forbidden West and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Star Citizen receives an Nvidia DLSS fix, while an EA app startup crash affecting Titanfall 2 under Wine-Wayland with Nvidia is also addressed.
GE-Proton is a community project with its own installation documentation. Players considering it should check the maintainer’s instructions and keep in mind that switching compatibility tools may affect an individual game’s configuration.
