Frostpunk 2’s final story expansion arrives in December, letting cities turn deadly storms into resources

Frostpunk 2’s next expansion will send players into a frozen valley with a tempting new way to keep their city alive: technology that can turn devastating storms into a resource. The Surge launches on December 14 for PC and consoles.

Developer 11 bit studios calls it the city-builder’s third expansion and says it introduces a story-driven scenario set in a new region. The team also describes it as Frostpunk 2’s final story-driven scenario, with support afterward limited to minor fixes and improvements.

The developer’s announcement places the new journey after a long expedition through the frozen remnants of the United States. The survivors reach a mysterious valley in search of a relic tied to Nikola Tesla.

Surviving the storm could become a source of power

The new setting brings a resource that can be used to expand city automation, according to 11 bit studios. The discovery also divides factions over how that power should be used, leaving the player to make decisions about the direction of the settlement.

The expansion’s storm-driven technology offers another twist on a familiar threat. Whiteouts have long made life difficult for Frostpunk’s inhabitants; in The Surge, specialized equipment can convert those storms into resources that can be harvested and stored.

Players will also explore caves and forgotten ruins while investigating the valley. The developer says the story has branching outcomes, though it has not detailed every choice or building system yet.

What players need before December 14

The Surge is an expansion rather than a standalone game. Its Steam listing says the base version of Frostpunk 2 is required, and the page currently allows players to add the expansion to their wishlists. A standalone price was not shown when we checked.

The new scenario follows earlier additions including Fractured Utopias and Breach of Trust. On the base game’s Steam page, the studio says the Deluxe Edition will become a complete package with the final DLC.

The studio says the wider Frostpunk universe will continue beyond Frostpunk 2, though it has not detailed those plans in the expansion announcement.
