The Pico 4 VR headset (review) was the first real competitor for the Meta Quest 2 (review) last fall. That is, in markets in which both headsets are available. The nearly 200 VR apps and games available at the Pico 4's launch have gradually expanded. Now, two new event platforms are launching, regularly bringing immersive events to Pico's stand-alone VR headset.

Discontinued VR platform returns as Pico partner

VR Startup Wave opened its doors at the height of the initial VR hype, establishing itself as the leading platform for concerts and parties in VR. However, Wave did not live up to its own expectations. The platform switched to 2D events and took its VR apps off the market in March 2021.

With the launch of the Pico 4, Wave probably hopes for new momentum in the VR event scene. Wave now produces VR events for the Pico Neo 3 (review) and Pico 4 starting with an exclusive concert.

Star DJ performs as virtual avatar

On Friday, January 13 at 9 p.m., the nearly one-hour "Calvin Harris Experience" starts. The British DJ, producer, and singer reached No. 2 on the charts for 42 weeks in 2017 with his album "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1," securing platinum. The album features collaborations with pop stars such as Ariana Grande, Pharrell Williams, and Nicki Minaj.

During The Calvin Harris Experience, the DJ will perform as an avatar in an immersive environment that users can freely explore. Interactions with other concert-goers as well as the creation of effects and personalized messages that rise into the air will also be possible.

The concert can be viewed via the free Pico Video app, which is available in the Pico app store. Can't make the event? Catch up on the "re-live" between January 14 and 26 at 9 p.m. each night. Or, watch a shortened version of the concert on your smartphone on TikTok-Live.

VRROOM Pico 4 Launch event with concert and after-show party

The social XR event platform VRROOM launches on January 10, 2023 at 8 p.m. CET with a thirty-minute immersive concert and aftershow party. The launch event, "The Big Crash," will be presented by Pico and streaming platform Deezer and includes performances by three French artists - Web7, Le Juiice, and Maxence.

On his blog Skarredghost, VRROOM co-developer Antony Vitillo announces the launch event as a special experience, saying, "I promise you that it won’t be a traditional concert: forget about a stage and a place for the audience… we don’t want to replicate in VR the same events that happen in real life. The VRROOM concert is expected to have some live interactive features and surprises."

Despite the Pico partnership, you can also experience the concert through VRROOM's SteamVR and Quest app. If you don't have VR headsets handy, watch The Big Crash via YouTube livestream.
