MeganeX Superlight 8K: Why European customers will have to wait longer for the high-end PC VR headset

FACTS

The Meganex Superlight 8K will be released in the USA first. In an interview with VR YouTuber Sebastian Ang, Shiftall CEO TK Iwasa explains why the European launch has been delayed.

According to Iwasa, the European launch has been delayed due to different certification requirements and regulations in each country. The company wants to meet all requirements to ensure a smooth launch in Europe and therefore needs more time.

However, the European launch is still planned for the spring of next year, perhaps March or April, according to Iwasa.

In the US, the high-end PC VR headset will cost $1,899 including shipping and taxes. Pre-order customers will also receive an extended three-year warranty, which normally costs extra.

CONTEXT

MeganeX Superlight impresses on paper

The technical specifications of the Meganex Superlight 8K are impressive: it has 4K micro OLED displays with 10-bit HDR support per eye, which together offer 27 million pixels - more than the Apple Vision Pro with 23 million pixels. The refresh rate is 90Hz.

The low weight of less than 185 grams without straps and practical features such as a flip-up display, electric IPD adjustment (58-72 mm) and diopter adjustment from 0 to -7 without additional lenses also make the headset interesting for VR enthusiasts on paper.

Pre-order with caution

Panasonic's offshoot Shiftall has announced a new VR headset every year since 2020, but so far none of the devices have made it to the West. The original MeganeX was only distributed in Japan via a lottery system.

The MeganeX Superlight, which was announced in early 2024 and was supposed to be released in the summer of 2024, has apparently been canceled in favor of the 8K version. It is now only listed under "prototypes" on the official website.

Another factor of uncertainty: Panasonic sold Shiftall to a Tokyo-based company in January. If you are looking for an ultra-light and high-resolution SteamVR headset, you might want to consider the already established Bigscreen Beyond.
