SURVEY RESULTS

Game Developer Collective conducted a survey, asking an unknown number of developers about the VR games market, with the following results:

  • 56 percent of respondents believe the market for VR games is stagnant or declining, while 23 percent believe it is growing moderately.
  • 53 percent of flat developers surveyed never want to get into VR development, and 13 percent don't want to do so for at least six years.
  • For 72 percent of respondents, Apple Vision Pro has had no impact on the likelihood of developing VR games in the future, while 9 percent are now less likely to develop for VR.
  • 88 percent of respondents cite limited reach and market size as the biggest enemy of the VR gaming market.

CONTEXT

Many flat developers have insufficient knowledge of the VR market

The survey should be taken with a grain of salt, as Game Developer Collective does not specify how many developers were surveyed.

It is also unclear how many VR developers were among the respondents, a factor that may bias the survey one way or the other. It can be assumed that VR developers have a more positive attitude towards the VR market and are also better informed about the chances of success and revenue.

The VR gaming market is dominated by Meta Quest, and its reach is likely limited to 3-5 million active players. VR can be a lucrative market for smaller studios, especially if they strike a chord with core users or go viral.

Recent examples include Combat Waffle Studios, which has made over 20 million US dollars with Ghost of Tabor, and the VR game Yeeps, which has amassed over 300,000 monthly players.

What the survey clearly shows is that flat developers still doubt the potential of the VR market and are disappointed with the performance of the Apple Vision Pro. But the Apple Vision Pro was never intended to push VR as a gaming platform. If anything, it is Meta Quest 3S that will breathe new life into the VR gaming market.
