You can now use Quest 3 as a boundaryless 3D camera
With the immerGallery photo app, you can now take stereoscopic photos without Boundary restrictions and view them directly on your Quest 3.
The photo app immerGallery has been able to take stereoscopic photos with the Quest 3's passthrough cameras for some time, but the Boundary system limited its usefulness.
The recently released 1.2.8 update removes the Boundary requirement, allowing you to move freely through indoor and outdoor environments. According to developer Daniel Pohl, this makes immerGallery the first boundaryless 3D camera app for Quest 3.
A digital level indicator can be used to verify that 3D images are aligned without roll rotation. This feature also makes it easier to extract photos.
The update also improves the video player support introduced in update 1.2.7. Details can be found in the release notes.
ImmerGallery is available on the Meta Horizon Store.
Quest 3 as a 3D camera: it's more of a gimmick
Thanks to an SDK update from Meta, developers have been able to turn off Guardian in passthrough mode for a few months now. A change that now also benefits immerGallery.
A word of warning to the casual Quest user: To use Quest 3 as a stereoscopic camera, you should be familiar with SideQuest and know how to enter ADB commands. Even with the latest update, the setup remains cumbersome, and there's not much immerGallery can do to change that. Unlike Vision Pro, Quest 3 does not support stereoscopic photography out of the box, so this "feature" must be enabled first.
More demanding photographers will probably want to use dedicated stereoscopic cameras anyway: Quest 3 has two 4MP sensors and Vision Pro has two 6.5MP sensors for passthrough mode. So the image quality leaves a lot to be desired.
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro (Max), you can use the Spatialify app to take high-quality stereoscopic photos without having to carry a second camera with you. You can find examples in the immerGallery or in our Croatia spatial photo gallery.
