VR MMORPG Zenith announces free-to-play launch date on Quest & Steam
Ramen VR announces the launch of the free-to-play mode for the VR MMORPG Zenith: Nexus on Meta Quest and SteamVR.
Developer Ramen VR has announced the release of Zenith: Infinite Realms for February 27, 2024. The free-to-play mode of the revamped VR MMORPG, formerly known as Zenith: The Last City, will be available for Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro, as well as Steam. A release date for Sony's Playstation VR 2 has not yet been announced.
Prior to release, Zenith will be removed from the Meta Quest Store on February 26th at 10 am, as the store app will be updated to Zenith: Nexus which includes both Infinite Realms and The Last City. Quest players who own the main game will still be able to access Zenith: The Last City during this time.
Monetization difficulties cause change
Ramen VR announced in early February that it would be moving Zenith: The Last City to a free-to-play model. The new Zenith: Nexus will include the original main game, Zenith: The Last City", which is still available as paid DLC, and the free "Zenith: Infinite Realms".
Zenith's new free-to-play mode introduces a central hub called City Plaza, as well as new challenges, game mechanics, and abilities. For details on the content, check out our article on the Zenith: Infinite Realms beta, which Ramen VR launched on February 17 as a stress test for the full game. The studio is also introducing a new virtual currency called "Zennies" that players can use to purchase seasonal content and cosmetics.
These measures are intended to help return the VR MMORPG to profitability. After an impressive start with chart records that led to a $35 million investment in Ramen VR, the studio has so far failed to monetize the VR game. According to reports, Zenith has been losing money for almost a year.
