Hideo Kojima is making a Playstation VR 2 game - report

Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima is said to be working on a game for Sony's upcoming VR headset Playstation VR 2.

The rumor comes from OopsLeaks, a Twitter account that specializes in leaks and rumors surrounding video games. Kojima's studio received developer kits of the Playstation VR 2 in November and is working on a "smaller project" that could be a VR game or experience, according to OopsLeaks.

Kojima is said to be working with award-winning VR storyteller Céline Tricart for the project. Tricart's best-known project is the VR film The Key. Kojima may have met Tricart at the Venice Film Festival in 2020: Both sat on the VR jury.

Kojima tries something "offbeat"

In an interview with Japanese video game magazine Famitsu from late 2021, Kojima hinted that his studio was working on two new games: an AAA title as well as a "challenging smaller project". The Japanese game designer did not reveal more.

Kojima went into more detail in a conversation with Tokyo radio station J-Wave in mid-January, where he spoke for five minutes about the smaller project. This "indie game" is an "unusual" project that has surprises in store and plays differently than anything that has come before.

It is not a traditional game, instead, he said, he is testing a "different concept." The creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding cryptically added that "it" will only work when the time is right in terms of market and hardware. Kojima let slip that it's not an AR game or a new Pokémon Go.

Playstation VR 2 - reveal in February?

Kojima is a VR enthusiast and has been talking about developing for virtual reality since 2016. At the end of 2019, the game designer confirmed his interest but admitted he didn't have the time.

For Playstation VR 2, only Horizon: Call of the Mountain has been officially announced so far. In January, Sony announced the specifications for PSVR 2 but did not show the device itself. According to rumors, the unveiling could follow in February.

Sony might also announce the release date and the price then. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.
