Create a photorealistic digital replica of your room with Teleport 2.0

Varjo has improved its 3D capture service Teleport and now offers five free 3D scans for you to try out.
Five months after the launch of Teleport, Varjo has introduced Teleport 2.0. The Finnish company promises a generational leap in photorealistic 3D capture and simpler workflows thanks to a fully automated, cloud-based pipeline that eliminates the need for manual steps. The data is processed using high-performance GPUs.
The updated 3D reconstruction engine is designed to preserve real-world details even in large scenes. Large environments can be captured in minutes and automatically processed. While previously scanning was only possible with a proprietary iPhone app, Teleport 2.0 supports capturing with almost any camera - smartphone, drone or DSLR.
Tools are also available for designing experiences: Users can create virtual tours or combine multiple scans to create expansive, walkable digital twins.
Teleport costs $30 per month and includes 15 3D scans. If you just want to try out the service, you can get five 3D scans free of charge. Exporting .ply files is only available with a subscription.
The 3D scans can be viewed on the web, on an iOS device or PC or with a PC VR headset.
Gaussian Splatting for VR: These solutions are available
Varjo uses Gaussian splatting for 3D reconstruction. The same technique is used by Niantic's Scaniverse, Meta's Hyperscape application, and the Gracia platform.
Varjo's Teleport is said to match the fidelity of high-end photogrammetry (examples can be found here). One drawback compared to the above solutions is that you need a powerful computer (RTX 3070 or higher) and a PC-VR compatible headset to view the 3D scans in VR. There's no standalone Meta Quest app yet, though Varjo is working on one.
The easiest way to digitize an object or location and view it with Meta Quest is offered by Niantic. Gracia also allows you to upload your own Gaussian splats, although I was only able to view them with a PC VR headset during my previous attempt. Finally, Hyperscape currently only allows you to view locations pre-scanned by Meta; it is not (yet) possible to create your own scans.
