FACTS

Polish studio Split Light has announced that its VR adventure, Pirates VR: Jolly Roger, will launch for Playstation VR 2 on May 15. The game originally debuted on SteamVR back in January 2025.

In Pirates VR: Jolly Roger, you set out to explore a cursed Caribbean island in search of lost treasure. For the PSVR 2 release, Split Light has introduced a brand-new intro—your adventure now opens in a lively bar scene that sets the tone and story before you set foot on the island.

Once you’re in, you’ll be navigating mysterious ruins, uncovering dark secrets, and squaring off against both undead pirates and wild animals. Classic pirate gear like flintlock pistols and cutlasses are at your disposal, along with magical artifacts to spice up your arsenal. You won’t be alone: a wisecracking, talking parrot tags along, dropping hints and comic relief as you go.

According to Split Light, the Playstation VR 2 version takes full advantage of the hardware’s haptics, with vibrations on the controllers and headset, plus adaptive trigger support for an extra layer of immersion.

CONTEXT

Caribbean adventure with a few storm clouds

Built on Unreal Engine, Pirates VR: Jolly Roger gives you the run of a sun-soaked Caribbean island—climbing over rocks, spelunking through caves, swimming in open water, and swinging on vines. It’s designed as a relatively compact experience, clocking in at around four to five hours of playtime.

In our brief hands-on, Pirates VR stood out for its vibrant environments and the sheer fun of exploration. That said, the game falls short when it comes to narrative depth — don’t expect a gripping story or complex characters. On the technical side, the PC version had some rough patches: pop-in, blurry textures, and a lack of comfort features like vignette or teleport movement options.

If you’re looking for a breezy pirate-themed VR romp with a dash of humor and some classic swashbuckling, Pirates VR: Jolly Roger might be worth a look when it lands on PSVR 2 next month.
