Steam Frame climbs to sixth place in Valve’s VR headset survey, but Quest remains far ahead

Steam Frame has moved into sixth place among the VR headsets recorded in Valve’s October Steam hardware survey. The headset accounted for 4.13% of the VR devices in the survey, up 3.72 percentage points from the previous month.

Meta’s Quest 3 remains the most common headset in this particular sample, at 27.27%. Quest 2 follows at 22.23%, while Quest 3S takes third with 11.04%.

The figures come from an optional, anonymous survey of Steam users. They show the makeup of participating systems that reported a headset, not total VR sales or a complete count of people using a headset on every platform.

Steam Frame has passed several older PC VR headsets

Valve’s October survey puts the Frame behind Valve Index at 9.90% and Pico 4 at 4.50%. It sits ahead of Oculus Rift S at 3.26%, Sony’s PS VR2 at 2.41% and HTC Vive at 2%.

The reported increase is large for a single month: subtracting Valve’s 3.72-point change gives a September figure of roughly 0.41%. That is a change in the survey’s share, not proof that sales or active users rose by a particular number.

On the same page, Valve reports that 1.75% of surveyed Steam users have VR headsets. That figure has a different denominator from the breakdown of headset models, so the two percentages should not be read as equivalent.

Steam’s survey captures only part of the VR picture

Steam Frame can run compatible games on the headset and stream PC VR games, but Valve’s survey does not give a full picture of all standalone or non-Steam use. Quest headsets also work outside Steam, so the figures should not be treated as a market-wide ranking.

Participation is optional, and the survey does not publish a total unit count on its overview page. Monthly movements can reflect changes in who took part as well as changes in the hardware they use.

For Steam users, the update is an early indication of where Frame appears among the headsets Valve can identify in its survey. Whether its share continues to rise will become clearer over future monthly reports.
