Playstation VR 2 wins Golden Joystick award for best gaming hardware
Playstation VR 2 was named Best Gaming Hardware 2023 at the Golden Joystick Awards, and that's not the only VR-related award Sony took home.
Last Friday was the Golden Joystick Awards, the longest-running awards ceremony for video games. It took place for the 41st time, and for the first time since 2019, it was held in person in London.
While the British public originally voted for the best video games, the voting is now done online and internationally. The website Gamesradar+, which organizes the event, recorded a record number of votes this year, which they claim to be in the millions. The big winner of the night was Baldur's Gate 3, which took home a record 7 awards.
Playstation VR 2 is the best gaming device of the year
Playstation VR 2 won in the Best Gaming Hardware category, beating out various PC accessories and a handheld.
Best gaming hardware:
- PlayStation VR2 (winner)
- Turtle Beach Stealth Pro Headset
- Alienware 34 AW3423DWF
- Nitro Deck
- ASUS ROG Strix Scope II 96
- Samsung 990 PRO
Meta Quest 3 was not nominated and would not have made the shortlist anway. Voting closed one week after the headset was released. Interesting to know: The Steam Deck won the award for best gaming hardware in 2022, and the Playstation 5 won in 2021.
PSVR 2 also wins in the software category
There is no category dedicated to VR hardware, but there is one for the best VR game of the year. Again, the Playstation VR 2 won with the exclusive title Horizon Call of the Mountain:
Best VR Game
- C-Smash VRS
- Horizon Call of the Mountain (winner)
- Synapse
- Vertigo 2 VR
- F1 23 VR
- The Light Brigade
In addition to three PSVR 2 exclusives (C-Smash VRS, Synapse), two PC VR games (Vertigo 2, coming this year to PSVR 2, and F1 23 VR) were nominated, as well as The Light Brigade, the only VR game on the list that is also available for the standalone Meta Quest.
The best Playstation game of the year was named Resident Evil 4, which will receive a free VR mode for Playstation VR 2 this winter.
Last but not least, No Man's Sky won in the "Still Playing" category. The title received an update in August that added support for foveated rendering, which greatly improved the graphics of the VR game. This made No Man's Sky VR to a hallmark game for Playstation VR 2.
