FACTS

The VR game was announced at the first State of Play of the year.

Metro Awakening is a new offshoot of the Metro series, built from the ground up for VR, and will be available on Playstation VR 2 as well as other major headsets.

The story takes place before the events of Metro 2033 and is intended to show the post-apocalyptic universe from a new angle. Developer Vertigo Games (Arizona Sunshine 1 & 2, After The Fall) describes the plot as follows

Set in 2028, the all-new story is penned by series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. You play as Serdar, a doctor searching for his wife amongst the claustrophobic, irradiated metro tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow. As Serdar ventures deeper into the Metro his courage and sanity will be tested by the supernatural forces he encounters, and will set in motion the events that lead to his spiritual awakening as something else entirely…

Experience Metro in VR for the first time

The VR game is said to be an intense FPS adventure that blends survival, stealth, and combat with a gripping story. According to the Playstation Blog:

This means you’ll get to experience Metro’s heart-pounding FPS gameplay in VR for the first time, fumbling for filters to protect you from radiation, panicking as you frantically charge your flickering headlamp in the dark, and reloading your arsenal by hand as you battle the many threats in the depths of the tunnels. With the addition of adaptive triggers and headset haptics on PS VR2 we were able to add tactile sensations to pulling our weapons’ triggers and getting hit by bullets.

Metro Awakening has been in development for 2.5 years and will be released later this year for Playstation VR 2, Quest 2, Quest 3 and PC VR headsets on Steam.
