FACTS

The team behind Skybox VR has released a preview version of update 2.0.0, which is now available for download and testing.

Among other features, the update introduces a multiplayer mode. Users can now create public or private rooms to watch media content together. The corresponding menu allows you to specify whether only the host or also the guests can control video playback. MIXED has not yet tested the multiplayer functionality. It is unclear whether the media content must be available on all devices or if it can be streamed live from the host.

Among major media player apps, only Bigscreen currently offers a multiplayer mode—making multiplayer support a significant addition to Skybox VR.

Other notable features of the update include support for Blu-ray ISO files, optimized HDR display of Dolby Vision videos, and Ambisonic 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound.

Users can now access media servers like Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin, and download content from the local network or Airscreen directly to Meta Quest.

Lastly, the update includes several quality-of-life improvements: users can now search specifically by file name and long-press on files or folders to open a context menu with additional actions.

You can find the full release notes for the preview version of update 2.0.0 on Reddit.

Skybox VR is available for purchase in the Horizon Store for $10.

Popular alternatives to Skybox VR

There are numerous Meta Quest media players.

The 4XVR app is currently popular among 3D enthusiasts because it can decode MVC 3D and play Blu-ray 3D films in all formats, including ISO. However, it costs $30. Both 4XVR and Skybox VR support playing media via a USB-C stick.

Bigscreen Beta is often used for social viewing because it was specially developed for that purpose and is free.

Which media player do you use and why? Please let us know in the comments.
