Meta Quest 3: New trailer whets appetite for unofficial Quake 4 port
The unofficial VR port of Quake 4 will be released in the first half of 2025, but you can check out an early access version now.
Team Beef has been working on Quake 4 for quite some time and has now released a new trailer showing the current state of the unofficial VR port.
Patreon backers already have access to an early access version, which received a sizable update on January 9th.
The update makes Quake 4 playable up to level 12 and unlocks vehicle sections that Team Beef is still polishing. The developers have also implemented PBR shaders, which already improved the look of the unofficial Doom 3 VR (the option has to be enabled in the settings), and fixed the supersampling option. In addition, you can now choose to have only the flashlight cast shadows, which will improve the performance, especially on Quest 2.
Quake 4 is not the only project Team Beef is working on. An official VR version of Wrath: Aeon of Ruin is planned for 2025, and in a New Year's post, the developers wrote about other possible but unconfirmed projects. These include an open-source version of Quake 3 that could appear in the Quest Store, as well as work with graphics engines that Team Beef "wouldn't usually touch or aren't suitable".
You can download the early access version of Quake 4 VR on Patreon.

Some of the better-known VR conversions for Meta Quest and, in some cases, Pico include
- Lambda1VR (Half Life 1)
- QuakeQuest (Quake 1)
- Quake2Quest (Quake 2)
- Quake3Quest (Quake 3 Arena)
- RTCWQuest (Return to Castle Wolfenstein)
- QuestZDoom (Doom)
- Doom3Quest (Doom 3)
- JK XR (Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy)
- Beefraider XR (Tomb Raider from 1996).
The VR ports can be downloaded from Sidequest, but they require you to own the original games.
