Meta Quest goes Xbox: New remote play feature bridges VR and console gaming

Microsoft and Meta are getting cozier: You can now stream Xbox games from your console directly to your VR headset through Remote Play.
Microsoft is expanding Xbox Remote Play to work with Meta Quest VR headsets. The new feature lets you stream games from your Xbox console directly to a Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, or Quest Pro through a web browser.
Until now, Remote Play was limited to mobile devices through the Xbox app. But Microsoft is opening up access to any device with a supported web browser — including Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest headsets. Getting started is straightforward: just visit xbox.com/remoteplay in your Quest's browser and follow the setup process.
The service works with any game installed on your Xbox console, including backwards-compatible titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360. Since the Quest controllers weren't designed for traditional gamepad inputs, you'll need to connect a Bluetooth controller like the Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox Elite Series 2 to play.
We will try out Remote Play soon and give you our impressions.
Meta and Xbox expand their partnership
This Remote Play rollout is part of Xbox's broader April platform update, which includes new mobile purchasing options and improved storage and streaming features for consoles.
The collaboration between Meta and Microsoft has been ramping up since last year when they announced closer cooperation. One of their upcoming projects is a special Xbox-themed Meta Quest headset running on Meta Horizon OS.
Also available: Game Pass Ultimate & GeForce Now
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has been available on Meta Quest since late 2023, letting subscribers play cloud gaming titles from the Game Pass library on a virtual 2D screen through the official app. You'll need a stable internet connection and a compatible controller like the Xbox Wireless Controller or DualShock 4 to use it.
There are some limitations worth noting. Xbox Cloud Gaming maxes out at 1080p/60fps, so don't expect ultra-crisp visuals. The Quest's battery life also means you'll need to keep gaming sessions relatively short.
For comparison, Nvidia offers an alternative streaming service called GeForce Now for Meta Quest. While it lets you play PC games from your Steam library on a virtual screen in higher quality, it only works with specific controllers and requires excellent network conditions.
