Try out Quest 3's impressive mixed reality relighting feature with Figmin XR

Quest 3 can simulate artificial light sources and shadows in your physical environment. You can try this feature with Figmin XR.

Meta introduced a new mixed reality feature called Passthrough Relighting for Meta Quest 3 a few months ago. It is part of the MR Utility Kit, a collection of useful tools and examples designed to simplify and accelerate the development of mixed reality apps.

Passthrough relighting allows developers to add sophisticated shadow and lighting effects to digital objects so that they cast realistic shadows on the environment or emit light that is reflected from the environment. This feature makes mixed reality experiences more realistic by visually blending elements of physical and digital reality.

The mixed reality sandbox Figmin XR has implemented this feature with Update 21, and you can try it out with the app in your own home. Various videos on X and YouTube demonstrate Passthrough Relighting in Figmin XR.

Figmin XR: Experimenting with mixed reality

I tried the effects and found them impressive. You can find many of the objects shown in the videos (glowing sphere, flashlight, dragon) in Home > Discover > Featured. To see the effects, you must first scan your room and enable room mapping in the app.

You can purchase Figmin XR for $20 in the Quest Store. The app is a mixed reality sandbox that allows you to decorate, modify and augment rooms with 3D models and AR elements from a variety of sources (Sketchfab, Reddit, YouTube, Giphy). The scene can then be saved.

I tested Figmin XR some time ago. Many new features have been added in the meantime.
