Shiftall announces new lightweight PC VR headset with 3.5K resolution per eye
Shiftall has announced yet another PC VR headset, this time with a higher resolution OLED microdisplay than the Apple Vision Pro.
Shiftall has opened pre-orders for a new PC VR headset, apparently skipping the Meganex Superlight announced earlier this year (more on that in the context section below).
The new Meganex Superlight 8K features a higher resolution 10-bit micro OLED display with a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 pixels per eye. This equates to approximately 27 million pixels across both eyes. For comparison: Apple Vision Pro offers 23 million pixels and Meta Quest 3 offers 9 million pixels. The maximum refresh rate is 90 Hertz. Another new feature of the Meganex Superlight 8K is a flip-up mechanism for flipping up the visor.
The visor weighs less than 185 grams, excluding straps and accessories. The headset features dual microphones, an "electrically adjustable" IPD (58-72 mm), and glasses-free diopter adjustment from 0D to -7D. The device is said to support HDR playback (only with Nvidia RTX 3070 or higher).
The price for the SteamVR headset is $1900, base stations and controllers are not included. Meganex Superlight 8K is connected via a converter box that forwards the signal from the USB-C cable to a DisplayPort and UBS 2.0 port on the PC.
The SteamVR headset is due to ship between February and March 2025.

Shiftall is constantly shifting its plans
The Panasonic spin-off has announced a new headset product every year since 2020. So far, none of the devices have made it to the western market. The original Meganex was only released in Japan, and even then only via a lottery system.
At the beginning of 2024, Shiftfall announced the Meganex Superlight, which was supposed to be released in the summer of 2024. It appears that the Meganex Superlight 8K has been canceled: The official website lists the headset under "prototypes".
Panasonic sold Shiftall to a Tokyo-based company in January.
If you want to buy an ultra-lightweight, high-resolution SteamVR headset, you might be better off with the already established Bigscreen Beyond.
