Exclusive: Leaked photo gives first look at Immersed Visor internals
We received a leaked image that reveals some of the internal hardware of the Immersed Visor.
Just weeks away from the official launch of the Immersed Visor, a leaked image gives us a first look at the internal hardware of this slim and lightweight 4K VR headset. It's one of the most interesting headset designs we've seen, and it's expected to weigh less than your phone.
First hardware leak
In August 2023, we saw early renders of the Immersed Visor. More recently, visual prototypes gave us an idea of how the finished VR headset should look.
What’s been lacking so far is any real hardware to back up Immersed claims that the Visor will begin shipping this fall. While there’s plenty of evidence the Visor is a real product, a photo of actual electronics is reassuring.
That’s what makes this first glimpse inside the Visor so interesting. I received the photo from a source that prefers to remain anonymous. The date and location of the photo is unknown, and it was embedded in a document without metadata.
Still, we can glean some information from a careful examination. This appears to be the right front panel of the Visor with the facial interface, displays, and optics removed.
The flexes that connect some components are clearly branded as Visor and feature a camera shutter icon. One connects to a device labeled 6DOF UR, presumably the front-facing, upper right, six degrees of freedom tracking camera.
The central PCB shows a lower right 6DOF camera and I’m guessing the partial text in the middle “ET …RA” is for eye-tracking camera. At the top, somewhat blurry print says Immersed Visor.
There’s a Delta Electronics cooling fan, some QR codes that my phone wouldn’t scan, and shielding obscures everything else of interest.
What the leak tells us
Immersed has a website that lists pricing and specifications for the Visor headset, so you might be wondering why the leak matters. If you had no doubts about the reality of the Visor, the leak doesn’t reveal anything new.
We already knew Immersed was planning a 4K VR headset in a glasses form factor. The design features head, hand, and eye-tracking so internal and external cameras make sense.
As a compact, high-performance device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, a cooling fan isn’t surprising. If you trusted Immersed from the beginning, the leak is only mildly interesting.
However, Immersed’s plans to launch the Visor in 2024, just over a year from the announcement was hard to believe. A photo of hardware suggests significant progress has been made and an October launch could be possible.
The price is another cause for skepticism. While the Apple Vision Pro sells for $3,500, the Immersed Visor claims to match its resolution and user interface for less than a third that price.
Immersed makes one of the best VR remote desktop apps, so the software should be good. What remains to be seen is the hardware quality and performance. The wait won’t be long.
The first hands-on demonstrations are scheduled for September 2024 at the Immersed Visor IRL event in Austin, Texas, where preorder customers will get a chance to try the device.
