FACTS

Meta Quest+ is now called Horizon+.

The subscription service, originally launched in July 2023, continues to operate with the same benefits under its new name.

  • Each month, subscribers receive full access to two new VR games selected by Meta.
  • These games must be claimed within the month—either online, through the headset, or via the Meta Horizon app. Unclaimed games expire at the end of the month and cannot be claimed retroactively.
  • By claiming the games each month, your Horizon+ game library will steadily grow. The subscription can be canceled at any time, allowing you to skip a month if you already own the games on offer.
  • If you cancel your subscription, access to previously claimed games will be paused. However, if you reactivate your subscription, your entire Horizon+ library will be restored, and you’ll be able to claim the current month’s VR games.
  • Horizon+ is supported on Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, and Quest Pro.

In March 2024, a Game Pass-style catalog with a rotating selection of games was introduced, along with regular discounts on VR titles from the Horizon Store.

The rebranding does not affect pricing or any existing features: Horizon+ still costs €7.99 per month or €59.99 per year.

CONTEXT

Why the rebranding?

The rebranding is part of a broader strategy.

About a year ago, Meta named its Quest operating system Horizon OS and announced plans to license it to select OEMs for developing their own VR headsets based on Horizon OS. Early hardware partners are Lenovo and Asus, although their devices have yet to be revealed.

Meta’s long-term goal is to create a diverse VR hardware ecosystem, where devices from various manufacturers run on Horizon OS. In this context, rebranding Meta Quest+ to Horizon+ aligns with the broader shift toward a unified Horizon platform. As part of this strategy, the Quest Store was rebranded as the Horizon Store, and the Meta Quest app was rebranded as the Meta Horizon app, to name just two prominent examples.

The rebranding also highlights Meta’s renewed focus on its metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds, which is now accessible not only on Meta Quest but also on mobile devices and the web. In the future, it will expand to other headsets powered by Horizon OS.

The success of Horizon Worlds is central to Meta’s metaverse ambitions. For Meta to profit from the platform—via digital marketplaces and advertising—Horizon Worlds must establish itself as a leading Metaverse destination. This strategic priority explains Meta’s intense focus on Worlds, and why it doesn't mind putting third-party developers at a disadvantage.
