Firmament: Myst-like Adventure comes to Playstation VR 2
After a long radio silence, the adventure game Firmament for Playstation VR 2 is confirmed. A release is still a long time coming.
Firmament is on the wish list of many adventure fans and is now also on the list of titles for Playstation VR 2. Myst studio Cyan Worlds has confirmed in a Kickstarter update that the puzzle game is no longer only planned for PS4, but also for PlayStation 5 and Sony's upcoming VR headset.
The PS5 version of the mystical puzzle adventure is planned for this year. A PSVR 2 mode is expected to be added once the headset is released. So far, only a few titles have been officially confirmed for Sony's upcoming VR headset, including the action-adventure Horizon Call of the Mountain.
The release of the Playstation VR 2 - and thus also the VR version of Firmament - could still be a while off. While we are currently still assuming a release in the second half of the year, there are already rumors about a possible delay to 2023.
Firmament: Mystical puzzles - also for PSVR?
Myst veterans should feel at home in Firmament right away: Abandoned ice landscapes and steampunk aesthetics characterize the art design. A magical artifact and the spirit of a deceased mentor accompany players through the adventure. In 2020, in the context of a delay, the studio announced that the narrative-focused concept would be thoroughly revised and expanded.
There is bad news for all those who would have liked to puzzle in this world with their good old Sony glasses: Support for Playstation VR has been dropped. If you backed the Kickstarter project and don't want to play on other platforms, you should contact Cyan's support for a reversal.
All backers who ordered a PS4 version will get the PS5 version for free, including future support for Playstation VR 2. A conversion for PC VR headsets is also in the works. There are no plans for Meta Quest (2) so far.
Cyan Worlds: A lot of experience with VR games
Firmament isn't Cyan Worlds' first VR project. About a year ago, the studio released adaptations of its classic Myst for Meta Quest (2) and PC VR. The original's elaborate backdrops boosted sales of CD drives in 1993, even if they were only lightly animated stills at the time.
In the years since, the US studio has released other VR titles. These include 2016's sci-fi adventure Obduction, resplendent with breathtaking backdrops, in which gamers explore a mysterious branch in a canyon and solve tricky puzzles. In June 2019, publisher Cyan Worlds distributed Eagre Games' VR game Zed, about the surreal memories of a businessman.
