Sci-fi series "The Peripheral": When VR fun turns real - and serious
Amazon's new sci-fi series The Peripheral, based on William Gibson's novel of the same name, launches in October. The first trailer looks promising.
The series takes place in a not-too-distant future. It centers on Flynne Fisher, a young and ambitious woman eking out an existence in a small rural American town.
Her life takes a sudden turn when she meets her brother. He is an ex-member of an elite military unit and shows her a high-tech device that immerses her in a futuristic London with all her senses. What at first seems nothing more than a virtual reality game later turns out to be much more: a gateway to a real future.
The Peripheral: Amazon shows high-impact trailer
The first trailer of the book adaptation shows a high-tech London of the future with giant statues, assassinating cab robots, futuristic camouflage devices, and Hollywood-level action and special effects.
American actress Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Hugo) plays the lead role of Flynne. Supporting actors include Gary Carr (The Deuce), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), and Eli Goree (One Night in Miami).
A pair of top producers is responsible for the realization: Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the creators of the sci-fi series Westworld.
From the mind of William Gibson
The Peripheral is based on the 2014 book of the same name by cyberpunk pioneer William Gibson. The author's best-known work is the 1984 novel Neuromancer(Amazon link), which won many awards and continues to shape pop culture today. The video game Cyberpunk 2077, for example, closely follows Gibson's template. Since 2017, there have been rumors of a Neuromancer film adaptation, which, however, has not yet materialized.
The first season of The Peripheral, which has been in the works since 2018, launches on Amazon Prime on October 21. The individual episodes last one hour each.
