Playstation VR 2: Mass production is about to start, rumors about games
Sony's Playstation VR 2 is nearing its launch - and the rumors are increasing.
Business analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported on Twitter that "the assembler and several component providers" of Playstation VR 2 are expected to start mass production in the second half of 2022. According to Kuo, the target for the second half of the year is 1.5 million units produced.
Kuo draws this assumption from a "supply chain check." The main supplier of aspherical lenses is Genius, according to Kuo. SDC is said to supply the OLED panel, MediaTek processors, and Goertek takes care of manufacturing. Goertek also manufactures Pico and Qualcomm XR headsets, among others.
Playstation VR 2: Launch not until early 2023?
Kuo believes a PSVR 2 launch is possible in the first quarter of 2023, depending on the development status of the Playstation VR 2 launch games.
Little is officially known about it, but Sony recently talked about the number of games during an investor meeting: According to Sony's Playstation chief Jim Ryan, the new VR headset will launch with more than 20 games, including first- and third-party titles.
According to Ryan, Sony is investing a "significant amount" in the game lineup to have an attractive game lineup at the headset's launch and beyond.
Resident Evil 8 and Call of Duty for Playstation VR 2?
On June 2, Sony officially plans to unveil the first PSVR 2 games in detail. Sony's gaming spokesman Shuhei Yoshida mentions a "sneak peak" of numerous PSVR 2 games in development on Twitter. That doesn't sound like the big reveal just yet.
A few rumors are circulating on Reddit in the run-up to the event. For example, an alleged screenshot of the program for the June event shows VR versions of the games "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2", "Resident Evil: Village", "Avatar" and "Daemonium", among others. A new "Killzone VR" is also rumored to be in the works.
Allegedly, Sony has secured the exclusive rights to the VR mode of Resident Evil 8, as it did with Resident Evil 7. The predecessor was already a hit when Sony's first VR headset was launched, as the rather slow-paced gameplay and creepy atmosphere are tailor-made for a virtual reality foray.
