How to attend the Cannes XR Festival in VR
The Cannes XR 2022 festival will showcase VR experiences and films for free. We'll tell you how to attend.
Currently, the Cannes XR festival is running for the fourth time. Until May 28, those interested can watch 18 VR experiences and films for free. The "VeeR Future Award Competition" award ceremony on Sunday, May 22, at 6:15 p.m., is the highlight of Cannes XR Week.
The films can be watched on the platform of the festival partner VeeR. Alternatively, you can navigate the Steam app "Alexandria: Port of Worlds" to launch the VR experiences at exhibition panels. The former host Museum of Other Realities is no longer involved.
Cannes XR 2022: Free VR movies and games
Among the 18 VR films and experiences are 360-degree videos like Faber Courtial's evolution documentary "Genesis." Also represented are elaborate "6DOF experiences" created in a game engine, such as the end-time survival combat "Luna: Episode 1 - Left Behind" by Charuvit Wannissorn. Another experience included is "Delightful Garden VR - Sights of Sins by Hieronymus Bosch," where you move through animated paintings by the Dutch painter.
Even full and relatively new VR games are available. These include the satirical "Virtual Virtual Reality 2" by Tender Claws, with its bizarre meta-levels, and the similarly surreal "Area Man Lives" by Numinous Games. Here's a look at the full list of nominated works:
- Deja vu
- Marco & Polo Go Round
- Genesis
- Luna: Episode 1 - Left Behind
- Glimpse
- Delightful Garden VR - Sights of Sins by Hieronymus Bosch
- Red Tail EP.1

- Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR

On Sunday, May 22, the awards ceremony will take place in "Alexandria: Port of Worlds". Prizes will be awarded in the categories "Best Story" as well as "Best Immersive Experience".
Cannes XR: How to watch the VR movies
A guide to VeeR can be found here. The free app is available for numerous VR headsets and stores - such as Meta Quest 2, Steam, Viveport, the Microsoft Store and Pico platforms. The section for Cannes XR can be seen directly in the main menu. If you have started an experience with the Quest 2, you can get back to the VeeR app by double-pressing "B". In 360-degree movies, you can use triggers to show or hide the controls.
The "metaverse world" Alexandria: Port of Worlds from the studio Kreis Immersive was just released for the start of the festival. You can find instructions for Alexandria on Steam and in the App Lab on the official website. In the entrance area, you can see all the inputs on the left wall, such as movement via stick or teleport. Some experiences have to load for a while before you can start them at the exhibition desks.
For more information on the festival, refer to the official Cannes XR website, as well as the exact calendar from Marché du Film, the festival's organizer.
Smell VR at the Cannes Film Festival
Visitors can experience more VR art at the film festival taking place simultaneously in the French resort. "Positron XR Cinema" will show Dreamworks' "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Virtual Tour," among other films, on five special VR chairs.
The world premiere of the "Cinematic Sensory Experience" music by composer and Grammy winner A. R. Rahman has a much more obscure effect. Visitors take on the role of a musician who searches for three mysterious men based on distinct smells emanating from an olfactory system.
