System Shock 2 VR no longer in development, but there's still hope

The studio behind the upcoming remaster of System Shock 2 has stopped working on a VR version. But that could change in the future.
The Head of Nightdive Studios, Stephen Kick, wrote on Bluesky last month:
"We were originally developing the VR version for Oculus, but Facebook cancelled a ton of projects, which unfortunately included SS2VR. We've discussed restarting dev and if we do it'll be a future patch or standalone release. We'll have to wait and see how the 25th Anniversary remaster is received!"
MIXED contacted Nightdive Studios last week for a statement, but did not receive a response.
According to Kick, the VR version is not completely off the table and could be revisited at a later date. Flat2VR Studios has also shown interest in taking over the project for Nightdive Studios.
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is coming to Xbox One, Series S and X, PS4 and PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 26.
The history of System Shock 2 VR
The remaster of System Shock 2 was announced in August 2019, with VR support first teased in early 2021. At the time, the project was still called System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. The studio even released a video showing an early VR version played on a PC using Valve Index.
In an interview with IGN, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick said that System Shock 2 VR was designed from the ground up for virtual reality. The team studied other VR games for the VR conversion, including Half-Life: Alyx.
In 2022, it was suddenly said that the VR version was a lower priority than the 2D version, and at some point after that, Meta must have stopped funding the project, causing Nightdive to put System Shock 2 VR development on hold.
