Meta Quest Charts give VR enthusiasts no reason to be happy

Another week and you won't find any big new VR titles in the charts. The Meta Quest audience still seems to prefer light fare.

The Meta Quest charts paint a clear picture: Quest users continue gravitating toward lighter, more casual experiences, with major VR titles notably absent from the rankings.

Animal Company, a free multiplayer survival adventure that just received a Valentine's Day update, maintains its position at the top of the charts. The ever-popular Beat Saber holds steady in second place, while the VR phenomenon Gorilla Tag rounds out the top three. Speaking of Gorilla Tag, fans of the VR monkey mayhem have something to look forward to — developer Another Axiom is already working on their next project, Orion Drift.

Some recent releases haven't fared as well. Plastic Battlegrounds, which briefly appeared in the top 10 last week, has already dropped off the charts. The mediocre Quest implementation Alien: Rogue Incursion, despite its big-name franchise, sits at a disappointing 12th place.

  • Note: When this data was collected, Meta's leaderboards appeared to have a technical issue — the revenue and best-selling charts were identical down to the last position. For this reason, we're only including the bestseller rankings this week.

OPINION

The troubling state of VR game development

The current Quest marketplace tells a concerning story. While early VR enthusiasts hoped for sophisticated gaming experiences, the platform is increasingly dominated by casual games, early access titles, and free-to-play experiences. Even more worrying is how few carefully crafted VR blockbusters have managed to maintain a presence in the charts, despite Quest offering far more than just colorful social VR apps.

Meta's push toward free-to-play content — evident in their Horizon feed in headsets — is creating serious challenges for established VR developers. The difficulty in gaining visibility on what's currently the largest VR platform has pushed multiple studios into crisis. Toast Interactive (creators of Max Mustard) recently shut down its office, while nDreams, Fast Travel Games, Soul Assembly, and XR Games have all been forced to reduce their operations.

The situation raises serious concerns about VR's future. I'm deeply worried that Meta's focus on budget VR could ultimately prove counterproductive. For now, it's clear the VR industry is facing significant challenges.
