Go and watch The Soloist VR on your Quest 3 if you haven't already

The Soloist VR is still a must-see VR documentary and worth revisiting on Meta Quest 3.

The Soloist VR is about to celebrate its second birthday. I recently watched it again on my Quest 3, and two things struck me.

The first thing I noticed is that you can now watch the hour-long VR movie all at once without interruption. When it was first released, the documentary came in two parts.

Second, I'm pretty sure the image quality has improved, at least on Quest 3. Even the streamed version now looks much sharper and clearer, making the VR experience even more immersive. If you prefer to download rather than stream it, you'll need to free up 27GB of storage. Two years ago, it took considerably less, suggesting that the bitrate has been increased. I have reached out to the production company for confirmation and will update this article if I hear back.

Even if you watched The Soloist VR two years ago with Quest 2, it is worth revisiting it, especially with Quest 3 and its improved lenses. You can watch The Soloist VR by searching for it in the Meta Quest TV app. Alternatively, you can use the following link to the VR documentary.

What is The Soloist VR about?

In this VR documentary, you accompany world-famous US climber Alex Honnold on climbing tours in the US and Europe. Honnold is a free solo climber, which means he climbs without safety equipment or help.

What makes The Soloist VR unique is not just the footage of Honnold's breathtaking climbing skills. The fact that the movie was shot with a heavy VR camera in the most difficult conditions at dizzying heights is an equally impressive achievement.

In my review two years ago, I wrote about The Soloist VR: "The VR format creates a sense of presence and allows you to follow Honnold's holds and movements up close. [...] The movie has its strongest moments when it lingers for minutes on a shot where you can hear nothing but Honnold's gasping and watch him breathlessly as he hefts himself up the rock in a calm and controlled manner."
