Dark VR RPG in Soulslike style leaves Early Access with Unreal Engine 5 upgrade
After four years of development, the time has finally come: Metalcat's VR action RPG Grimlord has left Early Access. A first patch is already available.
Developer Metalcat has announced that the VR action RPG Grimlord has left Early Access after almost four years of development. The full version has been completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and now offers four chapters, twelve boss battles and over 150 weapon parts for crafting.
A first patch (version 1.0.3) has also already addressed various technical problems. For example, errors in character creation with Valve Index have been fixed and weapon handling for Index users has been improved. Problems with the New Game Plus have also been fixed.
On the gameplay side, the patch increases the damage of staff spells and adjusts the damage reduction of plate armor against blunt weapons. In addition, the AI of some enemies has been optimized, and the boss music has been revised.
Physics-based battles in a dark fantasy world
Grimlord relies on a physics-based combat system with the Chaos Physics Engine from Unreal Engine 5. You can choose between five different branches of magic: Fire, Ice, Wind, Shadow and Holy. Each weapon has its own talents and abilities, which can be unlocked via a talent tree.
The story takes you through various areas such as Castle Arugiet and the Gloomy Estate. You will encounter various NPCs such as the helpful Rheala or a mysterious merchant. The developers promise a dark fantasy world full of secrets and hidden treasures.
From early access to the full version
Grimlord launched in Early Access on Steam VR in June 2023. The full version is now available for PC VR via Steam and Meta Quest. The price is around 30 euros. It is not known whether the game will be released for other platforms. However, the developers have mentioned ports for Playstation VR 2 and Pico 4 in the past
With Grimlord, the developers want to offer an extensive action RPG in a Souls-like style that will keep you glued to your VR headset for longer than the usual four to six hours.
