Oscar winner becomes a replicant in sci-fi series Blade Runner 2099
The cast is taking shape: Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh is set to star in Amazon's upcoming "Blade Runner" series.
Michelle Yeoh, who won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2023 for her performance in the science fiction hit "Everything Everywhere All at Once," becoming the first Asian to win the award, will star in Amazon's planned "Blade Runner" sequel series. This has been reported by several industry outlets.
According to Variety, Yeoh will play a replicant named Olwen who is nearing the end of her life. There are no further details about the plot yet.
Ridley Scott on board as producer
Amazon ordered the series, titled Blade Runner 2099 back in 2022. Set 50 years after the events of the 2017 Ryan Gosling sequel Blade Runner 2049, it is said to be a "top priority" for Amazon. Denis Villeneuve's sequel laid the groundwork for further stories in the Blade Runner universe, delighting critics and fans alike.
Original director Ridley Scott, who directed the first Blade Runner in 1982, will oversee the series as executive producer and may even direct some episodes. This would make the Blade Runner series similar to the recent sci-fi series Raised by Wolves, on which Scott worked with his son Luke. Silka Luisa, who previously worked on the time travel miniseries "Shining Girls" for Apple TV, will serve as showrunner.
With Blade Runner 2099, Amazon has secured the rights to one of the most popular and respected sci-fi brands, adding another franchise heavyweight to its slate alongside The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Boys, and most recently Fallout.
